Golf Scramble Format: Complete Rules and Tips

The scramble is the most popular tournament format in recreational golf, and for good reason — it's fun, fast, and inclusive for all skill levels. If you've been invited to a scramble event and aren't sure how it works, or you're organizing one yourself, here's your complete guide.

What Is a Golf Scramble?

In a scramble, every player on a team (usually 4 players) hits every shot. After each shot, the team selects the best result and all players play their next shot from that spot. This continues until the ball is holed. The team records one score per hole.

For example, on a par 4: all four players tee off, the team picks the best drive, all four play their approach from that spot, the team picks the best approach, all four putt from that spot, and the team takes the best putt. The score might be a birdie 3 even if no individual player would have made birdie on their own.

Basic Scramble Rules

  1. All players tee off on every hole.
  2. The team selects the best shot after each round of shots.
  3. All players play from the selected spot, placing their ball within one club length of the chosen ball's position (no closer to the hole).
  4. On the green, balls are placed within one putter head length of the selected spot.
  5. The ball must be played from the same surface — if the best shot is in the fairway, all players play from the fairway (not the rough next to it).
  6. Each player's tee shot must be used a minimum number of times (typically 2-4 times per round, depending on local rules). This ensures everyone contributes.

Scramble Handicap Adjustments

To keep things fair between teams of different skill levels, scramble tournaments often apply handicap adjustments. The most common method:

  • Take each player's course handicap
  • Use a percentage of the team's combined handicaps based on team size
  • 4-player team: Typically 20-25% of the combined handicap
  • 2-player team: Typically 35% of the combined handicap

The team's adjusted handicap is subtracted from their gross score to produce a net score. The team with the lowest net score wins.

Scramble Strategy Tips

1. Let the Best Putter Go Last

On the green, the player who putts last has the most information — they've seen the line from three other putts. Your best putter should always go last.

2. Take Risks with the First Tee Shot

The first player to tee off should grip it and rip it. If they find the fairway, great — the other three can take safe swings. If they miss, the team still has three chances. The first swing is your free shot.

3. Play Safe When You Have a Good Ball

If two players have already hit the green on an approach, the remaining players should go for the pin. But if nobody is on the green yet, everyone should aim center-green to ensure at least one safe result.

4. Use Everyone's Strengths

Maybe one player is a great driver but a mediocre putter. Another might be short off the tee but deadly inside 50 yards. Know your team's strengths and lean into them. The minimum tee shot rule ensures the weaker player's drives get used, so save them for shorter par 4s and par 3s.

Best Scramble Formats

Texas Scramble

A stricter version where each player's drive must be used at least 4 times. This makes the weaker player's contributions more meaningful and produces higher (more realistic) scores.

Florida Scramble

The player whose shot is selected sits out the next shot. This prevents the best player from dominating every shot and keeps all four players actively contributing.

Bramble

The team selects the best drive, then each player plays their own ball from that spot until holed. The best individual score counts for the team. A hybrid between scramble and best ball that tests individual skills after the tee shot.
