What is Scorecard Photo Upload?

Scorecard Photo Upload is a premium feature that uses AI to automatically extract your scores from a photo of your physical scorecard. Instead of manually entering each hole's score, simply take a picture and let our AI do the work!

How to Upload a Scorecard Photo

Step 1: Navigate to Upload Page

Start a new round the way you always do — tap Play — and the Create New Round chooser appears. Alongside "Just Me" and "Playing with Others", you'll see a card labelled "Upload Scorecard". Tap it.

Step 2: Choose Upload Method

You'll see two options:

"Take Photo Now" 📷 (Green button)
- Opens your device's camera
- Best for scorecards you just finished
- On mobile, uses back camera automatically
"Upload from Device" 🖼️ (Blue button)
- Opens your file picker
- Best for photos you already took
- Upload from gallery, cloud storage, downloads, etc.
- Great for uploading multiple rounds later

Step 3: Take or Select Your Photo

If taking a new photo:

Hold your phone directly above the scorecard
Turn phone sideways (landscape mode) for better framing
Make sure all holes and scores are visible
Good lighting is important (avoid shadows)
Keep the scorecard flat and in focus

If selecting from device:

Choose the scorecard photo from your gallery, cloud, or downloads
Make sure it's clear and readable

Photo requirements — please read this if you use an iPhone:

Accepted formats: JPEG / JPG, PNG and WebP
HEIC photos are not accepted. Your iPhone's photo picker will happily let you choose a HEIC image, but the upload will be rejected. If your iPhone saves photos as HEIC, either switch Settings → Camera → Formats to "Most Compatible" before you shoot the scorecard, or convert/export the photo to JPEG before uploading.
Maximum file size: 10 MB
Photos larger than 1 MB are automatically resized (longest side down to 2000 pixels) and re-saved as JPEG before uploading — you don't need to shrink anything yourself

Step 4: Wait for AI Extraction

You'll see a modal saying "Analyzing scorecard..."

The AI is:

Reading the course name
Extracting scores for each hole
Calculating totals
Detecting the date (if visible)

Step 5: Pick Your Row (Group Scorecards)

Most scorecards have several players on them, and the AI reads every row it can find — up to six players. You then tell it which row is yours:

If your name is recognized: you'll see "We Found You!" with that row highlighted. Tap "Yes, Let Me Verify Scores" to continue, or "No, Let Me Choose" to pick a different row.
If it isn't sure: you'll see "Multiple Players Found" listing everyone on the card. Tap your name. If none of them are you, tap "None of These - Try Again".
If there's only one player on the card: this step is skipped automatically.

Only the row you pick becomes your round — the other players' scores aren't used.

Step 6: Two-Sided Scorecards (Front 9 + Back 9)

Plenty of scorecards fold, with the front nine on one side and the back nine on the other. You don't have to squeeze both into one photo.

If the AI only finds nine holes, you'll see "We Found 9 Holes" and be asked whether you have a photo of the back nine:

Tap "Add Back 9 Photo" to take or choose a second photo. It's extracted the same way, and the two halves are combined into one 18-hole round.
Tap "This is a 9-Hole Round" if you really did only play nine.

Two safety nets in this flow:

Duplicate detection — if the two photos look like the same side (same course, identical scores or identical totals), you'll get a warning so you can re-shoot rather than saving the front nine twice.
Order confirmation — before continuing you'll see "Confirm Image Order" showing which photo the app treated as the front nine and which as the back nine. If they're the wrong way round, tap "Swap Front & Back 9"; otherwise tap "Yes, This Order is Correct".

Step 7: Confirm Course Match

The app will try to match the extracted course name to:

Courses you've saved
Courses in our golf course database
Google Places

Three possible scenarios:

A. Single Strong Match Found

You'll see: "We Found Your Course!"
Shows the matched course with location
Click "Yes, Use This Course" if correct
Click "No, Keep Scorecard Name Only" if it's wrong

B. Multiple Matches Found

You'll see: "Multiple Courses Found"
Shows the possible matches with match scores. How many you see depends on where they came from: up to 10 from your own saved courses, up to 5 from our golf course database, and up to 5 from Google Places.
Select the correct course
Or click "None of These" to skip

C. No Match Found

You'll see: "Course Not Found"
You can still create the round without course data
Click "Yes, Create with Scorecard Name Only"

Step 8: Verify Your Scores

The Score Verification Screen shows:

Course Name (required - must be filled)
Date (editable if needed)
Score Grid for all 18 holes (or 9 holes)
- Front Nine total
- Back Nine total (if 18 holes)
- Total Score
Validation Legend (explains color coding)
View Original Scorecard — a collapsible panel at the bottom holding your photo, so you can check the card against the grid. If you uploaded two photos, Front 9 / Back 9 tabs let you switch between them.

What to check:

✅ All scores are correct
✅ Scores are in the right holes
✅ Totals match
✅ Course name is filled in (required)
✅ Date is correct

Understanding Color Coding — there are four border colors:

Red Border: Required / missing score (you must fill this in)
Orange Border: Invalid score (outside the 1-15 range)
Yellow Border: OCR flagged — verify. The AI wasn't confident about this one, so give it a second look. These are the cells the warning messages are pointing at.
Green Border: Valid score (all good!)

How to make corrections:

Tap any hole's score to edit it
Totals update automatically
The app won't let you continue until:
- Course name is filled in
- All holes have valid scores (1-15)

Helpful Error Messages: If you try to create the round with missing scores, you'll see exactly which holes need fixing:

Example: "Please enter scores for all holes. Missing: Hole 3, 7, 12"

Step 9: Create Your Round

When everything looks good:

Tap "Create Round" (green button)
Round is created with all scores
You're taken to the round details page

Tips for Best Photo Quality

Lighting

✅ Good natural light or bright indoor lighting
✅ Avoid direct sunlight that creates glare
❌ No shadows covering scores
❌ Avoid low-light or nighttime photos

Positioning

✅ Hold phone directly above scorecard
✅ Turn phone sideways (landscape mode) for better framing
✅ Keep scorecard flat on a table
✅ Fill the frame with the scorecard
❌ Don't tilt or angle the photo
❌ Don't cut off parts of the scorecard

Focus & Clarity

✅ Make sure all text is in focus
✅ Wait for camera to focus before taking photo
✅ Hold phone steady (avoid blur)
❌ Don't use zoomed-in or cropped photos

Scorecard Condition

✅ Flat scorecards work best
✅ Clear handwriting or printed text
⚠️ Wrinkled or folded scorecards may have errors
⚠️ Very messy handwriting may require corrections

What the AI Looks For

Hole numbers (1-18 or 1-9)
Par values (if visible)
Your scores for each hole
Course name (usually at top)
Date (if marked on scorecard)
Front/Back/Total score boxes

Understanding the Verification Screen

Confidence Levels

The AI provides a confidence rating:

High Confidence ✅

Clean, clear scorecard
Good handwriting or printed
All scores easily readable
Usually requires minimal corrections

Medium Confidence ⚠️

Some unclear handwriting
Partial shadows or glare
Most scores readable
May need a few corrections

Low Confidence ⚠️

Very unclear handwriting
Poor lighting or quality
Many uncertain extractions
Carefully verify all scores

Warning Messages

Warnings always start with the name of the player they're about (or "Player 1", "Player 2" and so on if the AI couldn't read a name). You may see things like:

"Chris Hole 5: score could not be read" - That box couldn't be made out, so you'll need to type it in
"Chris: Fewer than 9 holes extracted - scorecard may be incomplete" - Not all holes were readable
"Chris: Expected 18 holes but found 9 scores" - The hole count doesn't line up with what was found
"Chris: Total score mismatch" - The printed total is more than 2 strokes away from the sum of the individual holes

What to do: Carefully verify the flagged holes and make corrections. Every hole a warning points at is outlined in yellow in the score grid, so they're easy to spot.

Editing Scores

Tap any score to edit it
Must be between 1-15
Totals recalculate automatically
All holes must have a score to create the round

Viewing Scorecard Photos in Rounds

Where to Find Your Scorecard Photo

Open any round that was created from a scorecard upload
Look in the round header (top of page)
You'll see a "Scorecard" button with a camera icon. If you uploaded two photos (front nine and back nine), it reads "Scorecards".

How to View the Photo

Tap the "Scorecard" button
A modal opens with your original photo
On mobile: Use pinch-to-zoom to see details
On desktop: Scroll to zoom
Tap "Close" to exit

Photo Visibility

✅ Always available on your own rounds
✅ Available to buddies you share the round with
✅ Works offline (after first view)

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Issue: "Failed to extract scorecard"

Possible causes:

Poor image quality
Scorecard not clearly visible
Network connection issues
AI service temporarily unavailable

Solutions:

✅ Retake the photo with better lighting
✅ Make sure scorecard is flat and in focus
✅ Check your internet connection
✅ Try again in a few minutes
✅ If problem persists, use manual entry

Issue: "Wrong scores extracted"

Possible causes:

Unclear handwriting
Shadows or glare on scorecard
Smudged or crossed-out scores
Numbers that look similar (3 vs 8, 1 vs 7)

Solutions:

✅ This is expected! Always verify scores
✅ Correct any errors in the verification screen
✅ For very messy scorecards, manual entry may be faster
✅ Future tip: Write clearly on scorecard for easier extraction

Issue: "Wrong course detected"

Possible causes:

Multiple courses with same name
Course name abbreviated on scorecard
Course not in our database
Handwriting unclear

Solutions:

✅ When multiple matches shown, select the correct one
✅ Click "None of These" if your course isn't listed
✅ Round will still be created with scorecard name
✅ You can add the course to your saved courses later

Issue: "Only extracted 9 holes (but I played 18)"

Possible causes:

Scorecard folded or cut off in photo
Back nine obscured or unclear
Two-sided scorecard (only one side photographed)

Solutions:

✅ When the app asks "We Found 9 Holes", tap "Add Back 9 Photo" and photograph the other side — the two halves are combined into one 18-hole round
✅ Check the "Confirm Image Order" screen so the front nine and back nine end up the right way round; tap "Swap Front & Back 9" if they don't
✅ If you get a duplicate warning, you've photographed the same side twice — re-shoot the other side
✅ For a single-page scorecard, make sure the whole card is visible and unfolded in the photo
✅ In the verification screen, you can always manually enter any missing holes

Issue: "Date is wrong"

Possible causes:

Date not written on scorecard
Date unclear or in different format
AI misread the date

Solutions:

✅ Edit the date in the verification screen
✅ Future tip: Write the date clearly on your scorecard

Issue: "Photo upload is slow"

Possible causes:

Large photo file size
Slow internet connection
Mobile data limitations

Solutions:

✅ Photos over 1MB are automatically shrunk before upload (longest side reduced to 2000 pixels, re-saved as JPEG), so you don't need to resize anything yourself
✅ Wait for WiFi if on slow mobile data
✅ Files must be under 10MB — if yours is bigger, take a new photo rather than a full-resolution export
✅ If timeout occurs, try again on better connection

Issue: "My photo won't upload" (iPhone users, read this first)

Possible causes:

The photo is a HEIC file — iPhones save in this format by default, and the photo picker will let you choose one even though it can't be uploaded
The file is larger than 10MB
The file isn't an image at all (a PDF or screenshot export, for instance)

Solutions:

✅ Only JPEG / JPG, PNG and WebP are accepted
✅ On iPhone, set Settings → Camera → Formats to "Most Compatible" so new photos save as JPEG, then re-take the scorecard photo
✅ For a photo you've already taken, share or export it as a JPEG first
✅ Keep the file under 10MB

Issue: "Can't see Scorecard button"

Possible causes:

Round wasn't created from scorecard upload
Scorecard photo failed to save
Round was created before this feature existed

Solutions:

✅ Only rounds created via "Upload Scorecard" have this button
✅ Manually entered rounds don't have scorecard photos
✅ You can upload a scorecard photo for future rounds

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this feature free?

No, Scorecard Photo Upload requires a Premium subscription ($6.99/month). This is a premium AI-powered feature that saves you time and improves accuracy.

How accurate is the AI extraction?

It does well with clear, well-lit scorecards and struggles with messy handwriting, glare and creases. That's exactly why the verification screen exists — you always get to check and correct every hole before the round is created.

Can I upload scorecards for multiple players?

The AI does read every player on the card (up to six of them), and you pick your row. What it can't do yet is create rounds for the whole group at once — the scores it saves are yours only. Your playing partners would each need to upload the same scorecard to their own account and pick their own row.

What happens to my scorecard photo?

Your scorecard photo is:

✅ Stored securely and linked to your round
✅ Only accessible to you and buddies you share the round with
✅ Kept private (never shared without your permission)

Note that deleting a round hides it from your rounds list — it doesn't remove the stored photo. If you'd like a scorecard photo permanently removed, contact support.

Can I edit scores after creating the round?

Yes! Like any round, you can edit scores after creation. The scorecard photo remains as a reference.

Does this work for 9-hole rounds?

Yes! The AI automatically detects whether you played 9 or 18 holes.

What scorecard formats are supported?

The AI works with:

✅ Handwritten scorecards
✅ Printed scorecards
✅ Standard golf course scorecards
✅ 9-hole or 18-hole scorecards
✅ Two-sided / flip-over scorecards (upload one photo per side)
⚠️ Very messy or damaged scorecards may have errors

Can I upload old scorecards?

Yes! You can upload photos of scorecards from any time. Just make sure to correct the date in the verification screen.

Does this work offline?

No, you need an internet connection to:

Upload the photo to our servers
Run the AI extraction
Search for the course

However, once the scorecard photo is saved, you can view it offline.

Can I use this for tournament rounds?

Yes! Scorecard photo upload works for any round type:

What We Extract

The AI reads:

Course name
Date
The player names written on the card, and each player's hole-by-hole scores — this is how it works out which row is yours
Totals (front, back, total)

Only the row you pick is saved to your round — the other players' scores are used just to let you choose, and aren't stored with it.

We do NOT extract:

Where to Find Your Scorecard Photo

Open any round that was created from a scorecard upload
Look in the round header (top of page)
You'll see a "Scorecard" button with a camera icon. If you uploaded two photos (front nine and back nine), it reads "Scorecards".

How to View the Photo

Tap the "Scorecard" button
A modal opens with your original photo
On mobile: Use pinch-to-zoom to see details
On desktop: Scroll to zoom
Tap "Close" to exit

✅ Click "None of These" if your course isn't listed
✅ Round will still be created with scorecard name
✅ You can add the course to your saved courses later

Issue: "Only extracted 9 holes (but I played 18)"

Possible causes:

Scorecard folded or cut off in photo
Back nine obscured or unclear
Two-sided scorecard (only one side photographed)

Solutions:

✅ When the app asks "We Found 9 Holes", tap "Add Back 9 Photo" and photograph the other side — the two halves are combined into one 18-hole round
✅ Check the "Confirm Image Order" screen so the front nine and back nine end up the right way round; tap "Swap Front & Back 9" if they don't
✅ If you get a duplicate warning, you've photographed the same side twice — re-shoot the other side
✅ For a single-page scorecard, make sure the whole card is visible and unfolded in the photo
✅ In the verification screen, you can always manually enter any missing holes

Issue: "Date is wrong"

Possible causes:

Date not written on scorecard
Date unclear or in different format
AI misread the date

Solutions:

✅ Edit the date in the verification screen
✅ Future tip: Write the date clearly on your scorecard

Issue: "Photo upload is slow"

Possible causes:

Large photo file size
Slow internet connection
Mobile data limitations

Solutions:

✅ Photos over 1MB are automatically shrunk before upload (longest side reduced to 2000 pixels, re-saved as JPEG), so you don't need to resize anything yourself
✅ Wait for WiFi if on slow mobile data
✅ Files must be under 10MB — if yours is bigger, take a new photo rather than a full-resolution export
✅ If timeout occurs, try again on better connection

Issue: "My photo won't upload" (iPhone users, read this first)

Possible causes:

The photo is a HEIC file — iPhones save in this format by default, and the photo picker will let you choose one even though it can't be uploaded
The file is larger than 10MB
The file isn't an image at all (a PDF or screenshot export, for instance)

Solutions:

✅ Only JPEG / JPG, PNG and WebP are accepted
✅ On iPhone, set Settings → Camera → Formats to "Most Compatible" so new photos save as JPEG, then re-take the scorecard photo
✅ For a photo you've already taken, share or export it as a JPEG first
✅ Keep the file under 10MB

Issue: "Can't see Scorecard button"

Possible causes:

Round wasn't created from scorecard upload
Scorecard photo failed to save
Round was created before this feature existed

✅ Only rounds created via "Upload Scorecard" have this button
✅ Manually entered rounds don't have scorecard photos
✅ You can upload a scorecard photo for future rounds

What happens to my scorecard photo?

Your scorecard photo is:

✅ Stored securely and linked to your round
✅ Only accessible to you and buddies you share the round with
✅ Kept private (never shared without your permission)

Note that deleting a round hides it from your rounds list — it doesn't remove the stored photo. If you'd like a scorecard photo permanently removed, contact support.

Yes! The AI automatically detects whether you played 9 or 18 holes.
